Do Free Prescriptions Equal Quaity Healthcare?
As government run healthcare looms ever closer in the United States, some seem to think the answer is to actually let the government do the job of getting us healthier. One of the ways we’re supposed to solve this problem is to have the goverment foot the bill so everyone can get the free prescriptions they supposedly need.
Unfortunately, the way to good health our politicians and most of the medical community believe is to just throw more money at the problem. Instead of looking at the causes of why people get sick and doing something to prevent that, the answer is to just pop another pill and now ask Uncle Sam to pay for it.
I have a friend that recently went to his doctor for his annual checkup and after blood tests his cholesterol came back a little high. His doctor’s suggestion was to go on a prescription medication, but my friend asked him, what about a change in diet, more exercise, in other words, let’s try to figure out why my cholesterol is high. His doctor had not even though about that. What he wanted to do was put him on medication costing hundreds of dollars per year for the rest of his life and let my friend’s insurance pay for it. That, right there,is the core of the problem with out of control medical expenses today.
If the President or members of congress, or all of us in this nation think that we’re going to solve healthcare by supposedly treating the symptoms for free (actually through billions in new taxes) they are simply wrong. We will continue to spend money and costs will continue to mount. Until we figure out how to take responsibility for our own healthcare by eating a healthier diet we will continue to dig the hole we can’t get out of.
Free medical care, free doctors visits and free prescriptions are not really free. Remember that.
